The Global Discovery class combines the study of Health and Fitness along with a choice of an elective to create a student interest driven class. Students work together in a multiage classroom where teachers encourage feedback, reflection and self-assessment in their work.
The two components of the Global Discovery class include:
Health and Fitness (two hours per week)
This component emphasizes the importance of wellness and fitness in order to be life long healthy individuals. Early adolescence is a crucial time for developing healthy nutritional and fitness habits and this course will help them to define what that means for them. They will learn about how their bodies react to negative and positive influences and think critically about the consequences of negative behaviors such as drinking and drug use. Class time is also dedicated to a variety of physical activities including hiking, soccer, yoga, running, interval training, swimming and tennis.
Elective (two hours per week)
Unlike required classes, students have the opportunity to choose their topics of study throughout the year in the Global Discovery class. Each trimester, students choose an elective course based on student interest and feedback.
Elective offerings are wide and varied and include Spanish, world music, cooking, art and design, and computer programming. Each elective class lasts one trimester to ensure students participate in three different electives each year. Health and Fitness, however, is two hours per week for the entire school year.
**Beginning in 2018, Spanish will be offered all year long.
